You don't want to do ANYthing.
You don't want to watch Netflix.
You don't want to read the news.
You don't want to go out.
You don't want to stay in.
Nothing feels right.
Nothing sounds fun.
Want to know a secret about this restless, fitful, antsy state?
It usually during THIS exact time that tremendous productivity and creativity is roiling under the surface.
This feeling is AVOIDANCE.
Avoidance, usually, of something you need to get done or secretly want to do, but you have a heavy load of emotions about.
When I was in school, I used to feel this way about starting a big project.
Before I got an accountant, I used to feel this way about doing my taxes.
Even though I've done these things many times, I start to feel restless about writing a new web page for BBPDX, before making a large purchase, before organizing an especially cluttered section of my tiny house.
I have all kinds of emotional feelings that sit right in my chest when there's something I'm avoiding.
To cope, I end up doing what I call productive procrastination rather than the thing that needs doing.
I take extra special care vacuuming the ceiling corners with the hand held attachment.
I dust the blinds.
I organize my underwear drawer.
I look up recipes for eight months of dinners...
I will do ANYTHING other than the thing I need to do.
(You do this, yes?)
Now I'm sure we don't avoid the same things, and I bet we productively procrastinate in different ways, but we're both doing the same thing: avoiding pain.
It's painful to start a new project.
It's painful to see how much I need to pay for my taxes.
It's painful to write.
It's painful to make decision after decision about things in a cluttered section of my house.
At least for me.
I mean, I will clean out the refridgerator to avoid that pain.
But here's the truth: the thing you need to do will continue to be there, the pain will still be there, silently in the background, until you face it and do it.
AND - here's the really cool thing about the thing you're avoiding.
It's the arrow pointing you in the direction of soul's growth. <--- HOW COOL IS THAT?!
You have a built in compass for which way to go next.
If you want to grow, look for what you're avoiding, and do that!
Then do it again.
Then do it again.
Growth. Growth. More growth.
De-cluttering a section of your house may not feel like "soul growth" work, but how you do anything is how you do everything.
If you're not dealing with a pile of stuff in your house, perhaps you're not dealing with a pile of stuff in your relationship or your finances or your health.
It's all connected.
Make changes in one area and you begin to loosen the lid on a stubborn jar in another area of your life.
Have you ever noticed that once you sit down, take a deep breath, and start doing the thing you're avoding, you feel a SURGE of energy?!
You've unleashed the productivity and creativity!
You're on a roll!
"Hey! This wasn't such a big deal after all. I don't know why I waited so long?!"
YES. YES. YES.
And it doesn't hurt so much either. Hallelujah!
Remember: Doing the thing you're avoiding is not only the way out of pain, it's the path to your soul's growth.
Now take a breath, find someone to hold your hand if you need it, and go for it.
You've got this.
