Alright. Let's talk about it.
Let's talk about the THING you're avoiding.
It could be something that you avoid on the regular - like doing your laundry or checking your credit score or cleaning out your junk drawer.
You know you need to do it and you'll get to it eventually, but ugh. It's just such a PAIN. You don't wanna do it right now, so you put it off.
Then there's the other kind of thing.
You know... the BIG THING that you're avoiding.
The hard talk.
The notice at work.
The new way of eating.
The commitment to exercise.
*panic panic panic*
Do you wish I would just stop right there?
Now, I'm not going to make you do anything.
We're just going to chat about what's going on, okay?

So! Why aren't you doing THE THING?
Why are you avoiding it?
Is it because you're afraid you might hurt someone else?
Are you afraid you might get hurt? (Again?)
Does it feel like your survival might be threatened? (When money is involved... )
Does it feel like WAY too much work?
Does it feel like you don't have the time or energy for that?
Or is it logistical?
You don't know the next step?
You don't even know where to begin?
You want to take the right steps and you don't want to make any mistakes?
You don't feel like it's the right time?
You don't feel like you have enough money? Energy? Support?
Those are all legitimate fears and reasons to not take action.
And they are also - to some degree - just a bunch of bullsh*t.
*I'm smiling so big right now so you don't punch me*
But let's be real.
You know and I know that when you want something bad - I mean really, REALLY bad - you will MAKE. IT. HAPPEN.
Pssht. You've got it.
You will FIGURE IT OUT how to GET WHAT YOU WANT when you REALLY, REALLY WANT IT.
What's so amazing about this?
It means that you are capable of knowing what you want, overcoming obstacles, and getting it.
You know, we've talked a lot about avoidance, resistance, procrastination - all states that keep you from really living FULLY.
But it order to get yourself to take the very first step, you have to get yourself into the right STATE. (I learned this from Tony Robbins. He's a genius in making fast and lasting change.)
How do you change your state?
You need to change how your body feels.
You need to get yourself amped up, excited, on fire to take action - EVEN for something that feels dreary or scary. If you want to get yourself to DO IT, you've got to get fired up!
Here are a few steps to get yourself into an action state:
1. MOVE your body enthusiastically!
2. Listen to inspiring music (this is not the time for love songs a la' Adele) - think UPBEAT!
3. Combine the two and dance around!
4. Pump your fists in the air!
5. Yell out some positive phrases about yourself.
It's basically your own personal pep rally.
**Now here's the key**
Get yourself UP, UP, UP and then - RIGHT THEN! - take action.
Don't wait until you come down.
START doing the thing you've been avoiding - even if it's just the first step.
Then, when you hit a wall of resistance again - repeat those steps to get yourself back in state.
You'll be amazed how well this works.
