On the right: Me at 157 pounds - almost 40.
Today’s post wasn’t supposed to be about me.
I was writing an entirely separate post about weight loss and I found this old picture of myself pre-Zumba and put it next to a picture I had taken yesterday and………… well………………
I’ve transformed y’all.
I’m so used to being the witness and cheerleader for other people’s transformations that I didn’t see it in myself.
My sisters say those pictures look like two different people.
And in many ways, they’re right.
That picture on the left is from 2010.
I had just purchased my first house - a fixer.
I was living in one room of the house and working on the others.
I would go to work at 6:45am, work until 3:30pm, get home and work on the house until 9pm, and then veg out in front of the TV eating some kind of gluten-filled frozen food for dinner every night.
On the weekends, I would work on the house.
I don’t remember exercising at all during that time.
I do remember eating a whole bunch of crap food though and feeling anxious nearly every day.
It was in December of that year that I went to my first Zumba® training (without ever having taken a class) and became licensed as an instructor.
In February of 2011, I held my first Brilliant Body PDX class at the Village Ballroom for six people.
I remember during those early classes I had to use my inhaler all the time during classes because I couldn’t breathe.
One time I even had to cancel class because I couldn’t get my breathing under control.
I would sniffle through class and it felt really hard to teach some days.
My knees would hurt.
My low back would ache.
And I was only teaching two classes a week.
Somewhere in the those first two years of running the business, I had a energy work client come to me with a request to help her with a condition called Moon Face.
I had never heard of it.
It was months after I’d finished working with her that I came across a book that completely changed my life: The Seven Principles of Fat Burning, by Dr. Eric Berg.
It sounds super gimmicky, right?
I sat down in the bookstore and DEVOURED that book.
I read the whole freaking book that day.
I couldn’t put it down.
I found the cause of my client’s moon face condition.
AND - I realized what had been keeping me overweight, sniffly, and in pain for years.
Fast forward to today and I’m a “weight loss transformation story” when I never really intended to be.
Yes, Zumba® has had a huge impact on my life, on my happiness, on my stamina and endurance, on my desire to feel better so that I could be a better teacher, but it was the book that gave me the knowledge and the tools to get there.
I’ll get into what I learned next week.
You won’t want to miss what I have to share.
PS: Do you have a transformation before and after picture? Send them to me and tell me your story! I may feature you on the blog. <3
